Stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination are interrelated concepts. Stereotyping reflects generalized expectations, prejudice refers to emotional reactions, and discrimination refers to actions, which then lead to violence. My work is a manifesto to end stereotyping. The term stereotyping is derived from the Greek words στερεός (stereos), ‘solid’ and τύπος (typos), ‘impression’, meaning ‘a solid impression about one or more ideas/theories’. A firm opinion leads to stereotyping.
SUBJECT TO CHANGE
If the problem is eliminated at its roots, it does not accumulate. No uniform stereotype can be drawn on anyone because everyone is an individual. Listen inwardly, think and form individual opinions, not make judgements based on appearances.
A stereotype is a generalized belief about a certain category of people, an expectation that people have of each member of a particular group. Stereotypes are often over-generalised and inaccurate. One scientific view (among many) is that stereotypes are a time- and energy-saving solution. In this view, people use stereotypes as a shortcut to interpreting their social context, and this makes the task of understanding the world less cognitively demanding for them. There are types of explicit and implicit stereotypes. The explicit stereotype is the one that one is aware of possessing and knows that one is using to judge people (pictorial representation of the black image field). The bias of the decision can be partially mitigated by conscious control. Implicit stereotypes, on the other hand, are in the subconscious of individuals and cannot or will not be controlled or made conscious. They are automatic and involuntary associations that people make between a social group and an area or trait. The representation of the subconscious in the central field of the image is a gestural world of forms imitating the free flow of thoughts, which is intended to invite the viewer to make free associations by allowing the space for the creation of an independent opinion. The red bar at the boundary between the outer and the inner field of the image allows the viewer to move between the saturated and the gestural field of thought, as a call to turn towards the person being judged with conscious attention rather than automatic stereotyping.
Lyrics:
I hate the world today
You’re so good to me, I know, but I can’t change
Tried to tell you but you look at me like maybe
I’m an angel underneath
Innocent and sweet
Yesterday I cried
You must have been relieved to see the softer side
I can understand how you’d be so confused
I don’t envy you
I’m a little bit of everything all rolled into one
I’m a bitch, I’m a lover
I’m a child, I’m a mother
I’m a sinner, I’m a saint
I do not feel ashamed
I’m your Hell, I’m your dream
I’m nothing in between
You know you wouldn’t want it any other way
So take me as I am
This may mean you’ll have to be a stronger man
Rest assured that when I start to make you nervous
And I’m going to extremes
Tomorrow I will change and today won’t mean a thing
[Chorus]
I’m your Hell, I’m your dream
I’m nothing in between
You know you wouldn’t want it any other way
Just when you think you got me figured out
The season’s already changing
I think it’s cool, you do what you do
And don’t try to save me
[Chorus]
I’m your Hell, I’m your dream
I’m nothing in between
You know you wouldn’t want it any other way
I’m a bitch, I’m a tease
I’m a goddess on my knees
When you hurt, when you suffer
I’m your angel undercover
I’ve been numb, I’m revived
Can’t say I’m not alive
You know I wouldn’t want it any other way
