Two cities mentioned in the Bible. According to the story recorded in the Book of Genesis, God destroyed the two cities by a “rain of brimstone and fire” because of the sins of their inhabitants. The names of the cities have become a proverbial synonym for wickedness and moral depravity, while their fall has become a proverbial synonym for the wrath of God.
The story of Sodom and Gomorrah is one of the first in the chronological order of biblical stories. Its biblical antecedents include the creation story, the fall of Adam and Eve, the flood and the rescue of Noah.
